Establishing A Good Bedtime Routine for a 5 Month Old
Hi there. I’m a new parent. As a new parent, one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is getting my infant to sleep and getting him to stay asleep, so I’m going to share with you the infant bedtime routine example that I’ve put together and we use every single night with my 5 and a half month-old son.
We go upstairs between 8 and 9 p.m. with a warm bottle of breastmilk that I’ve pumped ahead of time, and we get him into our room. In our room, we undress him from his clothes from the day and slip him into a nice organic cotton PJ, usually something that’s footed and with a zipper, those are my favorite. Before getting him fully dressed, I like to give him an infant massage of the legs and feet using the Burt’s Bees Baby lavender common lotion, it’s not sticky, it’s a nice consistency and it moisturizes him well and also has that really nice calming scent to it so that’s just an added feature.
Smart Sock and Swaddle
I then slip on his Owlet Smart Sock; this smart sock has given me so much peace of mind as a new parent because babies tend to make a lot of noises during the night and they’re unpredictable and when you’re a new parent you don’t really know what that is, so it’s really helpful to know that he’s okay and that he’s safe when he has that smart sock on, that we’re going to be alerted, God forbid, of anything. Not just reduces the chance of SIDS.
So, after slipping on his smart sock, we slip up his PJs and I will feed him. After being fed, I like to put him in his swaddle. So, he’s 5 and a half months, we’re still swaddling him and we like to use the Happiest Baby 5 second swaddle, you may have seen this before, it is so easy to use, it’s also called the Sleepea Swaddle. It has a large cord strap on the inside of the swaddle and then its zippers closed. It has breathable pouches at the top and bottom and it is just really really easy to use, it’s quick, it’s made of a really nice stretchy cotton material, it’s easy to clean.
Sound Machine and Sleep
Then I usually turn on his sound machine which is actually just a generic brand that makes many different sounds including white noise, ocean noise, rain sounds, and we choose the rain sounds and we put it up medium to high. I think it’s really important to keep it up loud enough so that other sounds that may occur during the night don’t wake your infant, because that’s typically one of the things that’s going to disturb their sleep is other noises.
Then I usually turn on his humidifier and before putting him in his bassinet I put inside the bassinet the Jojo Infant Sleep Lounger. We love this pillow because it grows with baby and it makes him feel cuddled and it’s also really affordable when compared to other products like the DockATot. His bassinet that we chose is the Chicco Lullago bassinet, it does sway a little bit, so once I get baby into there, I like to sway just to help him noddle off into sleep. Sometimes we use a pacifier and that’s usually the Avent soothie pacifier with a little WubbaNub on the end which is like a little stuffed animal and that’s just something to help him grab onto and cuddle with also. So that is our infant bedtime routine example and that is how we get our 5 month-old to sleep every night.
